Director of Strategic Development & Engagement
Role Overview
The Director of Strategic Development & Engagement is a part-time, hourly employee who supports NJAMF’s next phase of organizational growth by strengthening the fundraising strategy, advancing donor and financial systems, and supporting communications and program development efforts.
This role combines strategic planning with hands-on execution and works under the direction of Board leadership. The position plays a key role in helping NJAMF build the internal capacity needed to steward long-term growth.
The Director collaborates closely with the Co-Chairs, Executive Committee, Treasurer, and other Board members to advance development goals and organizational effectiveness.
Success Profile
The ideal candidate is a nonprofit professional with experience building fundraising programs and donor relationships in mission-driven organizations. They balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution, communicate with clarity and purpose, and work comfortably within a board-led structure. Familiarity with Asian American history and community, particularly the Japanese American experience, is a meaningful plus.
Knowledge
Nonprofit fundraising principles, donor lifecycle management, and development best practices.
CRM and donor management platforms, including evaluation and optimization of development systems.
Donor communications strategies and messaging frameworks that connect mission to audience.
AANHPI communities and the cultural and historical context relevant to NJAMF’s mission.
Skills
Development of fundraising strategies, donor pipelines, and multi-year development roadmaps.
Production of development materials including case statements, donor presentations, and campaign collateral.
Build and document internal systems and workflows that support organizational consistency.
Proficient with written communication that translates mission into compelling narratives for donors and partners.
Plans and executes events and engagement activities that deepen stakeholder relationships.
Abilities
Work effectively under board leadership while driving day-to-day priorities with initiative and independence.
Build trust with volunteer leaders and diverse stakeholders through transparency and follow-through.
Identify organizational gaps and develop practical solutions appropriate to a growing nonprofit.
Work independently in a remote environment while remaining responsive, collaborative, and accountable.
Core Areas of Responsibility
Fundraising & Revenue Development
Support the development and implementation of NJAMF’s fundraising strategy in alignment with organizational goals, including but not limited to the following:
Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing donors and supporters
Assist in identifying and cultivating prospective donors and funding opportunities
Develop fundraising tools and materials such as case statements, donor presentations, and campaign materials
Provide support with fundraising planning, tracking, and accountability tools
As organizational fundraising capacity grows, future projects could include:
Supporting individual giving initiatives, including annual and major gifts
Assisting with foundation and government grant efforts in coordination with grant writers and Board leadership
Supporting corporate sponsorships and partnership development
Expected work products may include:
Development of annual fundraising calendars and goal tracking materials
A multi-year development roadmap
Management of donor pipeline tracking tools
Note on potential conflicts of interest: Director should maintain a commitment to avoid any external fundraising roles or consultancies that represent a potential conflict of interest with NJAMF’s mission and/or donor base.
Financial, CRM & Development Systems Support
Support NJAMF’s internal fundraising and financial infrastructure by:
Assessing current development, donor tracking, and reporting processes
Supporting the selection, setup, and/or optimization of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and donor management tools
Assisting with the creation of development-focused reporting and dashboards aligned with Board oversight needs
Documenting processes and workflows to support consistency, transparency, and institutional continuity
This role works closely with the Treasurer and designated Board members. Budget authority, audits, payroll, and financial signatory responsibilities remain with the Board.
Communications, Outreach & Engagement
Support fundraising-aligned communications and engagement efforts by:
Contributing to the development of messaging frameworks that support donor engagement and program visibility
Helping align communications across fundraising, programs, and public-facing materials
Assisting with donor communications such as newsletters, impact updates, and fundraising appeals
Supporting coordination of contractors, volunteers, and/or committees engaged in communications and outreach work
Program Development & Engagement Support
Support program development and engagement initiatives that advance NJAMF’s mission and fundraising goals by:
Advising on program concepts and engagement strategies aligned with donor and community interests
Supporting the integration of fundraising and sponsorship opportunities into program planning
Assisting with the planning and execution of signature events at the Memorial to deepen stakeholder engagement
Serving as a representative of NJAMF with partners and community organizations, including broader Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) organizations, as appropriate and directed
Reporting Requirements and Organizational Structure
Reports to the Chair or Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors
Works collaboratively with the Executive Committee and Board of Directors
Operates under the strategic direction of Board leadership
Does not hold fiduciary or unilateral decision-making authority
Time Commitment & Employment Structure
Part-Time, Hourly Employee (Non-Executive)
Anticipated workload: approximately 20–30 hours per week, subject to organizational needs and approval
Schedule and priorities determined in coordination with the Co-Chairs
Performance will be evaluated based on progress toward agreed-upon priorities in fundraising support, communications and outreach, program development and event execution, and the strengthening of internal systems and workflows, as determined in collaboration with the Co-Chairs.
This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and applicable state labor laws. As a non-exempt, hourly employee, the Director of Strategic Development & Engagement is eligible for overtime compensation for hours worked in excess of forty (40) in a workweek, in accordance with NJAMF policy and applicable law.
All overtime must be approved in advance by the Co-Chairs or their designee. Hours worked, including overtime, must be accurately tracked and reported in accordance with NJAMF’s timekeeping requirements.
Education & Experience
A bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, public affairs, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience in development or fundraising will be considered. Candidates with demonstrated success in mission-driven or community-centered organizations are strongly encouraged to apply.
Pay & Benefits
The pay for this position is $38 to $43 per hour
This position may be eligible for an annual performance-based bonus, designed to recognize exceptional achievement of organizational goals, as approved by the Board
Relocation assistance will not be provided.
This position does not qualify for benefits
Equipment and Software Used
The Director will work with a provided computer and other office equipment and software. All equipment provided to the Director is the property of the organization.
Typical Working Conditions and Travel
The Director will work primarily remotely from anywhere in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, but must have the ability to travel frequently to the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During World War II (located just north of the U.S. Capitol at the intersection of New Jersey Ave. & D. Street NW in Washington, D.C.) and surrounding area as needed for local events and meetings.
The Director should be available to attend key meetings as needed including episodic travel to other parts of the country where NJAMF and partner events take place, at the Foundation’s expense.
